I have been interested in constructed cultural environments for a long time, ever since I visited museums when I was little. Later when I discovered living history museums and cultural villages, I became curious in how such themed atmospheres are put together–transporting objects, building sets, actors, and visitors who have not been there before to a particular time and place. I am currently exploring these notions of “themed spaces” in Japan as a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Yale University. I am starting this blog as I begin my fieldwork in Japan and will write abut the cultural themed spaces and sites that I encounter there. I will also occasionally write about those that I have been to outside of Japan.
